Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women. About 1 in 8 women born in the United States will get breast cancer at some point in their life.
When breast cancer is detected early, and is in the localized stage, the 5 year relative survival rate is 100%.
Early detection is the key! Make sure to perform monthly breast exams, and have regular scheduled mammograms.
Only a small percentage of lumps turn out to be cancer. A lump should never be ignored. If you find a suspicious lump make sure to follow up with your physician for a breast exam.
If you have a family history of breast cancer you are in a higher risk group.
Most women who have breast cancer have no family history.
